The requirement

Article 4: AI literacy is a legal obligation

The EU AI Act does not only regulate the systems you build and buy. It also places a duty on you to make sure the people around those systems understand them. This programme is built to meet that duty directly.

  • Who it applies to

Providers and deployers of AI systems must ensure a sufficient level of AI literacy among their staff and anyone else operating AI systems on their behalf.

  • What 'sufficient' means

Literacy proportionate to people's technical knowledge, experience, education and the context in which the AI systems are used — not a one-size-fits-all technical course.

  • Since when

The Article 4 obligation has applied across the EU since 2 February 2025, ahead of the Act's wider enforcement milestones.

  • What you need to show

Evidence that training has been provided and completed. Every learner receives an AICertified award you can hold on file.

Course overview

Article 4 of the EU AI Act requires providers and deployers of AI systems to ensure a sufficient level of AI literacy among their staff and anyone operating AI systems on their behalf. That obligation has applied since 2 February 2025 and it covers everyone who touches AI at work — not just technical teams.

AI Foundations for the EU AI Act is a short, practical programme built specifically to satisfy that requirement. Across three three-hour online modules your people learn what AI is and how it works, how to use generative AI tools safely and effectively, and how to supply the right context so AI outputs are accurate, appropriate and properly reviewed.

The programme is designed for organisation-wide rollout. Learners complete it online at their own pace, and every learner who completes it receives an AICertified award you can hold on file as evidence of the AI literacy measures you have put in place.

What you'll learn

  • What Article 4 of the EU AI Act requires and who it applies to
  • Core AI concepts, capabilities and limitations in plain language
  • How generative AI and large language models actually work
  • Safe, effective prompting for everyday work tasks
  • How to supply context so AI outputs are accurate and reliable
  • Risks, human oversight and responsible use inside your organisation
